Meteorite Crash Causes 'Mystery Illness' In Peru
LIMA, PERU -- “A supposed meteorite that crashed in southern Peru over the weekend has caused hundreds of people to suffer headaches, nausea and respiratory problems, a health official said Tuesday. Local media have reported eyewitness accounts of a fiery ball falling from the sky and smashing into the desolate Andean plain near the Bolivian border Saturday morning. Officials have said it was a meteorite. Jorge Lopez, director of the health department in the southern state of Puno, told The Associated Press that 200 people have been sickened by "toxic" fumes emanating from the resulting crater, which is some 66 feet wide and 16 feet deep.” Foxnews.com, Sept 19, 2007
Brain-eating Amoeba Kills Lake Havasu City Teen
LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ -- Officials are talking about what to tell visitors after an extremely rare amoeba attack killed a teenager this month. Fourteen-year-old Aaron Evans died on September 17th after swimming in one of Lake Havasu's beaches. Doctors later discovered it was due to an amoeba called Naegleria (nuh-GLEER-e-uh) fowleri. Health officials say amoeba-related deaths almost never happen. And yet, six people have died from the Amoeba this year. Michigan Catholic School Evacuated After Students Pass Out
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI — An 860-student Catholic school was evacuated after some children became sick during a church service Wednesday, authorities said. At least two were taken to the hospital. St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic School shut down classes shortly after 9 a.m. when at least three students passed out . Two of the children were taken to local hospitals.
